Depression Xplained

Depression Xplained explores what it's really like to have depression, through the story of David. David, is 23 years old and has had depression since he was a young teenager, being formally diagnosed when I was 17. Living with this condition has been a challenge and has had an effect on nearly every aspect of his life. Through the right combination of lifestyle habits, support, and medication he's learned to live a normal life. Read his story here.

Schizophrenia Xplained

This story follows the experiences of Jackson, a 17 year old who was diagnosed with Schizophrenia in August 2014 after experiencing symptoms since the age of 10. Schizophrenia Xplained follows Jackson’s journey to shed some light on what schizophrenia is, symptoms, treatments, and support groups. Epilepsy Xplained

Emily was 28 when she was diagnosed with Epilepsy. One minute she was in a carpark, the next minute she was in an ambulance. The Epilepsy Xplained story is based on Emily’s journey from that time. She’s been involved with Medicine X to help others understand more about their epilepsy and to encourage everyone to get help. She has one thing to say to everyone that experiences Epilepsy: "It’s okay to freak out, be upset and angry, just don’t let that be a permanent state". Easier said than done, we know, but it’s worth a try!

Advanced Prostate Cancer Xplained

David was diagnosed with prostate cancer in in October 2011 following a routine annual blood test. He has two daughters and three granddaughters. He lives in the Blue Mountains with his wife Jan. He is president of the Nepean Blue Mountains Prostate Cancer Support group. The Advanced Prostate Cancer Xplained story is based on David's journey with his illness and how he has persisted and continued to live a full life with his family.

PH Xplained

PH Xplained follows the real-life journey of Kim, a mother of two, and Paul, an ex-league player, who were both diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Like many people, Kim and Paul didn’t realise the early signs of PH and were shocked by the diagnosis. They have both now opened up about their condition to help others learn about PH. Through this illustrated flip-through story, learn about the early symptoms, complicated medical concepts, support groups and the emotional roller coaster that comes with being diagnosed with PH.

Diabetic Macular Oedema (DME) Xplained

Julia has Type 1 Diabetes and about 2 ½ years ago her eyesight rapidly deteriorated, almost overnight. She was working in ICU as a nurse couldn’t read the monitors on the wall. She'd had eye checks before and never had a problem with her sight. This time, her Optometrist referred her to a specialist, who started eye injections straight away for a condition she'd developed called DME. Luckily her nursing background and a few good books helped start her journey, but in Julia's words, download DME Xplained for "simple, down-to-earth, solid information at your fingertips".

Parkinson's Xplained

Parkinson's Xplained follows the story of Janice, a 56 year old living in Sydney, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Initially, Janice's way of dealing with Parkinson’s was to totally ignore it. It has only been recently that she has opened up more to others about her condition. Learn about Parkinson's and Janice's story here!

Colostomy Xplained

The Colostomy Xplained story is based on the journey of a real ostomate, Robert.  Robert was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2012, which resulted in surgery and a permanent stoma.  He has wonderful support from his family and partner and his own personal quote is “Learn to Love your bowel”. Robert is now in his fourth year of after ostomy surgery! 

Type 2 Diabetes Xplained

Type 2 Diabetes Xplained follows the story of Hare, who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2007. Through the Type 2 Diabetes Xplained story, Hare meets Lisa, who has had diabetes for more than 20 years. It wasn’t until Lisa lost her vision 3 years ago that she began to take it seriously and wanted to become involved by sharing her story. Winning the battle every day can be a struggle, but winning the war on Diabetes is the reward. 

MS Xplained

MS Xplained follows Astrid and Melissa's visit to a high-tech medical centre to learn all about MS. Both Melissa and Astrid have been diagnosed with MS and continue to live healthy and positive lives with the condition. Astrid is a National Advocate for MS Australia, and blogs about chronic disease and living with MS. Melissa is a mother of 2 whose main focus is her family. She has found that understanding her limitations has given her a balance that helps maintain her health.
